Throughout my personal and professional studies, I have been drawn to the voices of strong female characters who seemed to transcend the cultural and historical restraints imposed upon them. The most notable of these influences are (in no particular order and please excuse my Western focus, I’m still learning!): Eleanor of Aquitaine, Elizabeth I, Hildegard De Bingen, Teresa of Avila, Marina Abramovic, Anais Nin, Edna St Vincent Millay, Leni Riefenstahl.
I felt compelled to share these these queens, artists and thinkers as they have influenced my art and the way I perceive the world in ways that I cannot even begin to describe. Their words and wisdom have helped me through innumerable difficulties and help ground me in the present while expanding my understanding of the past. They have illuminated darkness and inspired me to reach heights I did not know were possible. I feel as though their voices came to me at all the right times and I am grateful that I was receptive to their messages.
Here is a fairly comprehensive (by no means complete!) list of female thinkers. Worth a look!
Have an illuminated day!
